Rose is unsettled, curious, and bored. Life in a hippie commune is her parent’s dream come true, not hers. She doesn’t share their passion for living off the land, nor does she enjoy the isolation that is thrust upon her. When she convinces them to send her to public school in the nearby town, a new world opens up to her.

As she pursues her education, Rose chooses a different path, leaving her parents heartbroken at her insistence they are hiding something from her. She’s convinced her father isn’t the man her mother married.

Although she finds love far away from her roots and upbringing, her wounds only deepen as she keeps her family at arm’s length. What she loses during those years can only be retrieved with her understanding that “a Rose by any other name is still a Rose.”

The Review:

Alexa Kingaard’s book My Name is Rose is a powerful story about a young girl who wants nothing more than to leave the life she’s known.  It’s a coming of age story that gives readers lessons about family and love.  Rose’s parents love their life in the hippie commune but Rose is not happy and she knows there can be more when she starts going to school at a nearby public school.

Her wishes end up pushing her from her family, can she handle the loneliness of the growing space?  Can she learn to accept her family for who they are?  Follow Rose on her journey of finding herself and rediscovering and redefining what family really is.

I’ve always enjoyed books that have characters that are well-developed and strong, and Rose is one such character.  Full of the challenges that the youth of today need to deal with.  The central theme of family can be seen throughout the book despite the tribulations that the characters are dealing with.

Alexa Kingaard brings her characters to life in these pages and allows her audience to share in their journey.  It is a beautifully written story that will grab your attention and keep it throughout.
