Original Synopsis can be found here.

The last thing Jamie Watson wants is a rugby scholarship to Sherringford, a Connecticut prep school just an hour away from his estranged father. But that’s not the only complication: Sherringford is also home to Charlotte Holmes, the famous detective’s great-great-great-granddaughter, who has inherited not only Sherlock’s genius but also his volatile temperament. From everything Jamie has heard about Charlotte, it seems safer to admire her from afar.

From the moment they meet, there’s a tense energy between them, and they seem more destined to be rivals than anything else. But when a Sherringford student dies under suspicious circumstances, ripped straight from the most terrifying of the Sherlock Holmes stories, Jamie can no longer afford to keep his distance. Jamie and Charlotte are being framed for murder, and only Charlotte can clear their names. But danger is mounting and nowhere is safe—and the only people they can trust are each other.

The Review:

As a woman in her mid-30s, people are always surprised that I still read YA books, when I found this Sherlock Holmes retelling, I was super excited.  I’m already a big fan of Holmes and Watson, I’ve watched the BBC show as well as the CBS, and most of the original Holmes books.  So for me this was a strong 4 star read for me!

A Study in Charlotte is a retelling that follows not the original Holmes and Watson, but their descendants, Charlotte Holmes and Jamie Watson.  Told from the point of view of Jamie Watson as he gets entrenched into the comings and goings of Holmes.   This is a fun and extremely entertaining mystery novel for young (and not so young) adults and as a first book in the series was done with a bang.   The back story of the families that are all involved are well written and will keep you on your toes throughout.

There is murder, and substance abuse and even talk of rape.  Topics that are still so relevant today.

These characters go from wary acquaintances to best friends through their adventure and mystery.  I loved the way we could see the friendship form and then progress into a tentative romance.  A must read for everyone!  I can’t wait to follow along on their adventures.

Until Next Time!
