Culinary arts student, Hope Mastriano, is down on her luck. Homeless on Thanksgiving Day, she’s caught trying to break into her cousin’s apartment by her sexy boss and lifelong secret crush.

Since getting dumped seven months ago, head chef Vinnie DiFrancesco has been in a frustrating holding pattern. He returns relaxed from a retreat, but his life is sent into a tailspin when he offers Hope, the event coordinator at his family’s trattoria, temporary housing.

With the trattoria’s traditional Italian Christmas Eve charity dinner slated to be featured on a local TV segment and things heating up in his apartment, the two must set aside their different visions to make the event a success. When a computer glitch threatens their plans, Hope proposes a risky solution. Vinnie must believe in Hope and his heart in order to secure the future of the restaurant and make it a Christmas to remember.

EXCERPT:

He jogged up the stairs to the fifth floor. Turning into the main hall, Vinnie made his way toward his apartment while digging in his pocket for the key and almost collided with three suitcases and a stack of boxes blocking his path.

Someone was moving out…or in, given the person was fiddling with the lock—with a hanger. He had moved in a couple days before his trip to California and hadn’t met any neighbors, but he did recall seeing a tall blonde woman walking out of this apartment one morning as he came in from his morning jog. This one was a few inches over five feet, and although he couldn’t see much, dark hair peeked out of the white knit cap on her head.

“Hey, can I help you?” he called.

She shrieked and dropped the hanger. “I can’t find my key and locked myself out.”

He knew that voice. “If that’s the case, why don’t you call the super?”

“My phone’s dead, and I don’t have his number.”

Vinnie pulled out his phone. “Then it’s a good thing I have it. I’ll give him a buzz.”

“No!” she cried and turned to face him.

Wide brown eyes framed by long brown lashes stared up at him.

“Hope?”

She pushed back the cap and brushed aside the bangs that fell into her eyes. “Vinnie. Funny meeting you here.”

“Same goes. You don’t live here,” Vinnie countered, surprised to be faced with one of the pantry chefs from where he worked.

Hope raised her hands. “I know how this looks, but I can explain.”

“You can explain why you’re trying to break into this apartment?”

“It’s my cousin Faith’s place. And I wasn’t breaking in.”

Vinnie raised an eyebrow and shifted his gaze to the hanger on the ground.

“Okay, so maybe it seems as though I was breaking in, but the key she gave me no longer works.” She reached in her coat pocket and withdrew a key similar to Vinnie’s.

“Did you try calling your cousin?”

“Gee, no, I didn’t think of that,” she sneered. “She’s on a cruise and then staying in Florida a few days for business. I wasn’t kidding about my phone dying and not knowing the super’s number.”

Vinnie felt a pain in his temple. Probably from not having enough to eat or drink on the red-eye from LA. “Fine, let’s get your stuff in my place. You can use my phone.”

Hope grabbed a handle of a suitcase. “Thanks, Vin. You’re nicer than people at work say.”

He paused while unlocking his door. Well, hell. Is that what they say about me? Guess he needed to do damage control with his staff. Even though his parents owned Trattoria DiFrancesco, Vinnie was the head chef and in charge of hiring of anyone who worked in the kitchen.

Including the pretty spitfire who had just swept past him, Hope Mastriano.

He hoisted the stack of boxes and followed her inside. When she headed back out, he perused the hall to see how much more stuff she had.

There were two more suitcases and a pet carrier.

“You run away or something?” Vinnie asked.

“Moved out of Steve’s place. I’m done with that deadbeat.”

“On Thanksgiving Day and with nowhere to go?”

“It’s been long overdue. Besides, I thought I could crash at Faith’s until I figured out my next step.”

“And in there?” He nodded to the carrier.

Hope raised it up a few inches. “This is Lucky, my cat.”

Vinnie was not a fan of cats, with their sharp eyes and sneaky ways. He peeked inside and into the green eyes of a white cat. He closed the front door and stepped around Hope’s stuff, including the cat, which she pulled out of the carrier. Lucky leaned forward and sniffed him before letting out a soft mew.

Between the pixie-haired cutie and the cat, the peace and relaxation he had found out west was a distant memory. By the time he got to the trattoria for Thanksgiving dinner, Vinnie was going to need a beer or glass of wine.

Possibly both.

The complete trilogy:

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble / iBooks / Kobo

EXCERPT:

“After everything that’s happened today, I never expected a stranger to take that kind of time,” Serena says with a sigh.

“What’s happened today?” I ask, quirking a brow, and I see her cheeks tinge with a bit of color.

“Wh- oh, nothing. The guy who caused the accident just kind of ran off, is all,” she lies, averting her eyes to the setting sun outside.

“Dirty move,” I say, crossing my arms. “Good thing you run a soap store.”

She just stares at me in disbelief for a beat before she bursts into a laugh at my awful pun, covering her face for a moment. “Oh…wow,” she says, starting to take a few steps toward me. “Who are you?”

“Someone who can tell you’ve had too much on your plate for one day,” I say. Every muscle in my body wants to take a step toward her as well, to play the game between us that she’s slipping into already. I want to flirt with her, charm her all over again, even as a stranger, take her out for a good time. If I’m really honest, I want to bend her over that counter and take her right here and now.

But for her safety, I have to keep my distance.

“Oh, who am I kidding,” she says, running a hand through her hair and looking out the door. “You’re right. Today’s been a nightmare.” She looks back to me, eyes flitting up and down my form. “Thank you, though. Really. God, I feel so silly, you didn’t come here to-”

“Get some rest,” I say, her name on the tip of my tongue before I reel it back in. “I’ll come back by tomorrow. Maybe I can take care of any other messes that come up,” I say, a boyish smile on my face.

I see the color flush into her cheeks, and she loses her words for a moment before she says, “I’ll be here!”

She was a spoiled brat when I knew her, but even then, it was the easiest thing in the world to get her off her guard and swooning. But I liked that about her. She didn’t feel shame for her feelings. She felt everything intensely. It was good to see that hadn’t changed.

There’s so much more I want to say, but I step out into the cool air without another word to her as I hear her voice calling, “Wait, I didn’t get your name!”

I pretend not to hear.

Seeing how happy she is now, I can’t let our tangled past flood into her life and upset everything she has. She’s running her own business, for god’s sake.

How would she feel about me if she knew I was an enforcer for the mafia?

Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

In order to find love, you must set your heart free.

All her life, Faith has lacked a true, deep connection to someone. Her parents are long buried, her friends are too busy, and all she has is her job in corporate law to make her feel grounded. Each day is like the last with no telling if there will ever be something more for her. When a distant aunt passes away and leaves Faith her land, Faith has to put her empty life on hold and travel across the country to settle the estate.

A West Coast girl used to a fast paced lifestyle, Faith is ready to be entirely unimpressed by what she finds on the Georgia coast. That is, until she meets Alex.

Strong, tall, and decidedly anti-social, Alex is everything that Faith has been dreaming of her whole life. The fact that he scowls as he shows her the wonders of her new land doesn’t bother her… not like seeing him without his shirt does, anyway.

Alex has a lot of ground to cover before he can learn to trust someone again, but Faith is a lovely temptation. Slender, raven-haired, and smart as hell, she calls to him on a primal level… if he can get over the ghosts of his past.

Distrust, uncertainty, fear of change… In order to find their way to each other, they will each have their own demons to overcome.

EXCERPT:

Alex wasn’t sure if she kissed him or if he kissed her. All he knew was that suddenly his lips were on hers, and they were softer and sweeter than he could have ever dreamed.

He felt her hands on his chest, and somehow his arms were around her waist. They fit perfectly in that deep curve right above her hips. He wasn’t sure, but he thought he felt the tip of her tongue against his. Alex let out a noise in the back of his throat.

She closed her eyes as he began to work the lotion into her back. Alex started at her shoulders and slid a finger underneath the strip of her halter top. He worked his way down, across her shoulder blades. She let out a moan as he hit a tense muscle in her lower back.

Alex paused, and a flicker of embarrassment washed over her. She expected him to stop, but instead he did it again, deeper. She moaned again, and the rest of her body started to respond.

His touch didn’t just release that tight muscle in her back. It started a fire throughout her entire body. Damn, she thought. She could drift away, let this man touch her all over like he was touching her right now.

His thumbs expertly glided across her lower back as he worked out the kinks. Faith’s breasts tightened, and she felt her nipples pebble. She sucked in her breath, head bowed, and could see her nipples as they responded to him.

Alex’s gaze dipped down to Faith’s lips, glazed with a gloss and smelling of Christmas. He wished he’d had the time, the mind-set, to enjoy those lips the first time he’d tasted them. His eyes continued downward to her breasts. From this angle, he could see straight down the button-up gingham shirt to the pink lace bra below. Her cleavage was deep and deliciously tempting, though he was disappointed he couldn’t make out her nipples. When they’d hardened in that little swimsuit, he was so turned on he could almost taste them between his lips.

He was tempted to kiss her to the point it was almost unbearable. To nibble on those lips and run a thumb across her breasts. Hell, I even know what she tastes like. But this time it would be different.

“Alex,” she started, but he couldn’t hold himself back anymore. It took less than a second to close the distance between them. His lips were on hers, exploring. Faith parted her lips farther to welcome his tongue against hers. God, she tasted sweet.

With one hand, he cupped her chin upward to him. The other pulled her close against him. His hardness slipped with ease between the heat of her soft thighs. Those little shorts really are good for something besides a tease.

Alex needed more, wanted more, and by the way Faith responded, he knew she did, too. He started to walk her backward, through the open bedroom door.

Book Blitz: Dirty Morals by Lexi Adams

Dirty Morals
Lexi Adams
Publication date: November 12th 2017
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

Good girls work hard. Good girls keep their noses clean and don’t do anything that would be considered morally questionable. I’m a good girl… Or at least that’s what I used to think.

With my mom sick and health care bills mounting, who has time to do things right anymore? I have to take care of things, and fast. So what if being paid for sex is a bad idea? It’s only once or twice—until Caleb Robertson, with his bright blue eyes and propensity for saying and doing everything right, books me for the night. Suddenly there’s no longer a right or wrong. There’s just my heart, and it’s about to be broken.

Goodreads / Amazon

EXCERPT:

The next day finds me feeling a bit more cheerful… hell, who am I kidding? As soon as I left my Mom alone in her room for the day, I was miserable again. At the very least, it’s my day off and I can take some small comfort in that. I make the short trek to the coffee shop down the street from my apartment to meet with my friend, Kara Rogers. As usual, she’s sitting in a booth waiting with my coffee already ordered. I slip into the booth, taking the paper cup in my hands. It is steaming hot but it keeps me grounded as I try to focus on what my best friend is going off on a tangent about. Kara is one of the few people who knows about my rather grim living situation and she’s always looking for some weird new ways for me to make some extra cash.

“– and you don’t even have to have sex with them, at least, not always! Girls are making thousands,” she rambles and I blink my eyes in confusion as I try to make some sense of what she’s talking about.

“Wait. Kara, what the hell? Are you talking about prostitution? Seriously?” I hiss, able to piece the story together somewhat judging from what I’d heard. Kara rolls her eyes, sipping from her iced coffee.

“It’s an escort website. Really high profile. If you were listening, you’d realize that it’s not prostitution. Well… not really,” she says defensively. I roll my eyes, feeling my phone suddenly vibrate in my pocket. I grab it, swiping it unlocked only to see a message from Kara. It’s the URL of the website she’s telling me about. My thumb immediately moves to the delete button but something gives me pause. I stare at the message for a long moment before closing out of it, notably not deleting the stupid thing. Kara seems to notice, lips curled into a sly smile.

“I’ll look at it later, just for laughs,” I say defensively. She submissively throws her hands up and goes off on some other tangent that I scarcely pay any mind to,. In spite of my scorn for her suggestion, I can’t deny that there’s something interesting about the concept.

“Shit,” Kara blurts suddenly and I focus in just in time to see her packing up to leave.

“You’re gone, then?” I sigh, standing from the booth and tossing my empty cup into the garbage bin.

“The boss just texted, apparently someone called in today and I need to cover for them. Rain check, alright? It’s not like you were paying me any attention, anyway,” she teases, though there’s no malice in her words. I smile, feeling somewhat abashed at how obvious I’d been.

“Sorry, Kara. You know how it is,” I explain weakly. She smiles, leaning in to kiss me on the cheek before quickly shuffling out of the coffee shop.

“See you next time, Maggie. Think about what I told you,” she calls back as she steps through the door. I’m sure there’s no way in hell I’d consider selling my body for pay, though I suppose she did say it was for companionship as well. Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad… No! I’m not even going to think about it. I’m going to go home, look for a new job and forget this entire conversation.

That idea works until much later that evening, after I’ve had about two glasses of wine. I’m a lightweight, what can I say? The way I saw it, there was little harm in checking out this little escort website. Like I’d told Kara, I’ll just look at it for a few good laughs. I clumsily type in the link, propping my chin up in my hand as I scroll through the page. The profiles of the female members look relatively innocuous and some have their earnings listed on their profile sidebars. My eyes widen at some of the large numbers I see and for a moment I’m tempted.

Much longer than a moment, truthfully. I’m tempted long enough to go through the process of making a profile, taking a few drunk selfies before deciding to use a photo from my cousin’s wedding. I keep telling myself it’s just so I can see some of the private features; just for fun, no harm can come of it. In spite of myself, with the booze fogging my mind a bit, I kind of hope to get a message. It’d be flattering, at the very least.

With a single click, I save my profile and push away from the computer. I stumble a bit as I head to my bedroom, my mother having gone to bed hours previously. Hitting the mattress, I’m as good as dead to the world. For once, I get some decent rest, but I know it’s likely just a fluke.

The sound of my phone vibrating the next morning jolts me awake and I glance around blearily before managing to snag it off of the nightstand. I swipe it unlocked, blinking as I try to make out the words on the screen. It’s a notification from some website that I’d drunkenly signed up for. Nothing new, I tend to get download crazy when I’m drunk. Much to my surprise, however, it’s a notification from that escort site I’d joined.

“Hello, I’d like to meet up with you for a night,” I read aloud, snorting in disbelief. It’s not as flattering as I’d have thought, especially considering that the male profiles have more features for anonymity. I type back two letters, a simple ‘NO’. Hitting send, I expect the conversation to be over and done with. Moments later, as if this guy had been anticipating my response, my phone lights up again. “There’s five grand with your name on it, if you agree to meet me,” the message reads. My eyes widen in disbelief as I read over it again, unable to believe that some crazy guy would offer five grand just to spend the night with me.

There’s no way I’m willing to sacrifice my dignity for this… even if five grand is incredibly tempting. Swallowing a lump that I’m surprised has formed in my throat, I shakingly type out another rejection. There’s no telling what this guy looks like, or what on Earth he plans to do to me. It’s a matter of safety at this point; admittedly I’ve already given up on the idea of keeping my dignity intact.

“If you’re worried about my intentions, I assure you that you will be well taken care of. I wouldn’t dare see harm befall such a beautiful young woman, especially if you were under my… care,” the next message reads and I’m startled by how relentless this guy is. Before I can formulate a response, he sends me a winking emoticon. Suddenly wondering what he means by ‘care’, I can’t deny that my interest is piqued.

In all likelihood, this guy probably looks like he got hit in the face with a shovel as a kid. No good looking or actually self-respecting guy would join one of these sleazy websites. Then again, I never would have expected that I’d join either.

“Fuck it,” I mumble, fingers darting across the on screen keyboard. I agree to meet him, under the condition that there be no expectations on this first meeting. I’ll check him out, but nothing more than that. He sends a smiling emoticon and then one with a kissing face. Inexplicably tickled by how goofily charming this man seems to be, I hesitate before tossing my phone aside.

Ugh. I can’t believe I’m doing this. What happened to the Maggie Stroud who carried herself with pride? I suppose she died long ago. The new Maggie would do almost anything if presented with the opportunity to earn five grand.

Almost anything…

EXCERPT:

They walked in silence as they weaved around tourists of all nationalities. Blanca soaked in the diversity and half-heartedly discerned the different languages she heard in passing, picking up a phrase here and there as the Christmas spirit thrived among the bustling crowd.

In the distance, Julien leaned against the trunk of his car with his arms folded across his broad pecs. He was dressed in a dark blue cable knit sweater and gray slacks like he’d just come from a semi-formal event even though the sun had only been up for about an hour. He tilted his head to the side, and his blond hair fell in large, unkempt waves covering half of his face. Neither a smile nor a frown played upon his full lips, but the subtle wrinkles at the corner of his eye betrayed his excitement in seeing all of them.

He looked so beautiful … beautiful and sad.

Maybe, heartbroken might be a better word.

Blanca’s footsteps fell into a slower pace as she inspected him. It was one thing to know in the recesses of her memory that she had seen … and touched … and, let’s just come right out and be blunt … licked all of his bits and parts. But it was an entirely other matter when she had him trapped in her iPhone as nothing but an extreme close-up of sea-glass-bleached-by-the-sun eyes with a wicked grin that could seduce her outright. Except that she was impervious to his moves thanks to their lack of continental proximity.

But, seeing him again face to face sent an unexpected and entirely unwelcome zing of feels to her bits and parts, and an overwhelming urge to turn around and hop the next flight out kicked her in the chest right where she felt the biggest zing of all.

The gravity of the moment rushed up on all of them as Julien reached out to Chase first. Both men embraced one another, planting kisses on each other’s cheeks and breathing out their condolences over the loss of their grandmother.

They had grown up together at Julien’s family’s estate. Chase, though American-born, had spent almost all of his summers living in Champagne with Julien and his family, which was just a short walk across the driveway to his grandmother’s home, according to Chase’s explanation during one of their flights.

Julien pulled back from his cousin and faced Maxie, gripping both her shoulders and tugging her into a stoic kiss that barely grazed her cheek. When he finally turned to Blanca, his expression shifted to a curious eagerness that bordered on desperation, and her pulse decided to skyrocket.

What the?

“I am so pleased you’ve come to see me, to see my home. I wish it were under better circumstances.” Julien cupped Blanca’s face with his ice-cold palms and leaned down to kiss her cheek, catching the corner of her mouth causing her breath to hitch out loud.

As Blanca searched for a reply, Julien turned and opened the trunk and, with Chase’s help, jigsaw puzzled the suitcases and duffel bags into his car while Maxie shuffled Blanca into the back seat with her.

She crossed one leg over the other and started bouncing it back and forth.

“Are you okay?” Maxie patted Blanca’s white jeans-clad leg. “You’re going to stab one of these guys in the back with that spiked heel on your boot if you don’t calm down. What gives?”

“Nothing. Everything. I probably shouldn’t have come.”

“Why? Julien obviously wants you here. He only asked you every day for the last week if you’re still coming, and you even cancelled appointments for him. You can’t back out now. Besides, it’s Christmas. It’s our duty to spread some joy up in these guys.”

Spreading definitely leads to joy.

“I just don’t want him to get the wrong idea. I’m only here to see more of France. I didn’t think—” she lowered her voice to a whisper as Julien and Chase walked around the sides of the car. “I’d ever see him again, or, if I ever did, it would be like a whole year from now at another one of Chase’s parties or after our routine chit-chat eventually lost its steam.”

“So what? You talk to him all the time. What’s the big deal?”

“He’s just a friend. I don’t regret fooling around when we met, but I can’t be more than that now.”

Maxie chuckled and shook her head. “No one’s asking you to.”

Tell that to my heart.

Julien and Chase got into the car, slamming their creaky doors and continuing their conversation in French as Julien fired up the engine and pulled away from the airport. Maxie shrugged at Blanca and leaned in, expecting a translation.

Blanca listened for a seconds, tugging her fingers out of her black leather gloves. “The funeral is tomorrow afternoon with a huge gathering afterward, and it’s going to be packed,” she whispered. “We’re also the last to show up. Almost everyone’s here in the city. They’re, uh, he’s offering, no wait, he said you guys should stay with Chase’s parents at his grandma’s house because of all the drama he caused the last time you three were under one roof.” Hmph. “Which he’s still sorry about,” she added, under her breath. Then, her eyes flew open, and she swatted Julien’s shoulder with her gloves. “Hey, where am I supposed to stay?”

“With me,” Julien replied, then continued his conversation with Chase.

“Hellllo? Don’t I have any say in this decision?”

“You can stay in one of my parents’ guestrooms. I’m sure they won’t mind, but wouldn’t you rather keep me company? You spend all your nights with me on FaceTime as it is.”

He’s got me there.

Blanca leaned in and whispered into Maxie’s ear to ensure they couldn’t hear her. “If things get weird staying with Chase’s parents, I’ll fake a meltdown and get us into a hotel, and if Julien gets all grabby hands on me while I’m staying with him, I’ll, eh, I guess I’ll just see how it goes.”

Damn, I’m weak.

“Atta girl.”

“Shut it.”

Chase twisted around in his seat. “What are you two scheming now?”

“Nothing,” they both exclaimed at the same time.

EXCERPT:

“Mako…can I kiss you?” He asked quietly, his voice deep and husky, the sound made my stomach flipped; my body ignited to life, craving his touch.

“Okay.” I whispered back, my heart racing with anticipation.

He leaned in slowly. I allowed my eyes to close as his lips pressed lightly against mine. They were smooth and moist, the kiss was soft and inviting, but ended quickly. He pulled back slightly, allowing a second to pass, waiting for me to tell him to stop.

I didn’t want him too, my mind raced with a sudden desire to feel his lips against mine, once more. And again, he pressed his lips against mine, firmer this time. His resting hand moved to cradle my head as he deepened the kiss, our lips interlocking. His taste was sensational, the rich hazelnut flavor of coffee still lingered on his lips.

My arms roved over his torso slowly, venturing over his sculpted chest, causing him to shudder. I silently cursed at the soft fabric of his shirt, as it hindered me from touching his skin. My hands continued their ascent over his chest, reaching his shoulders, wrapping around his neck. We pressed against each other; the hardness of his sculpted body pressed against mine, sending a shockwave of electricity through me.

My lips pressed firmly against his, letting him know I wanted more – I needed more, and he delivered accordingly.

Goodreads / Amazon

EXCERPT:

Stumbling from the Harley, my legs feel like jelly. My starving stomach no longer growls, now as numb as the rest of my cold, battered body.

“Where are we?” I ask when the biker only stares at me.

Soft rain soaks his thick, dark hair and beard. He looks like a wild man, ready to skin and devour his kill. I’m desperate to look away from his nearly black eyes and remain in control of myself. I can’t, though, because he both terrifies and intrigues me.

“I live in the apartment upstairs. You can crash here until you figure things out.”

“Thanks.”

When his hand jerks forward, I immediately flinch and expect more violence after a shitty day that’ll never end. His hand grips the back of my neck, sending panic and pain through me. I fist my hands and prepare to fight him. Exhausted after so long running, I never expect his lips to crush mine. He forces my mouth open and tastes me roughly.

I can’t think. Nothing about the biker’s earlier demeanor made me believe he desired me, so his kiss throws me off guard. I never consider what he might expect from me in return for a safe place to stay for the night. No, instead my fear violently shifts into the kind of lust I’ve long imagined and never enjoyed.

Before I can meet his passion with mine, the biker releases me and turns away. I’m left rejected and desperate, yet unable to show either emotion. My only option is to follow him obediently.

SNEAK PEEKS:

SINS OF THE FLESH (Gluttony)

BY STACEY BROADBENT

Throwing caution to the wind, I slipped my feet into a pair of runners and walked down the road, telling myself it was to clear my mind. But really, I was on the prowl for fresh meat. Someone vulnerable—easy prey. I had to be smart about it; it was broad daylight after all.

Every person who walked past became a possible target. In my mind’s eye, I pictured a computer log for each one, listing their attributes. Having limited knowledge on the ins and outs of cannibalism, I had no idea what the perfect body type was for consumption. Would it matter if they were male or female? Was it better if they were lean and muscular, or was a layer of padding more flavourful? How was I to choose?

Turns out, I didn’t need to think about it at all. On my walk back home, I was knocked off my feet by a man out for a jog. He’d been too busy flicking through the playlist on his phone to see me, and by the time we’d both looked up, it was too late. We collided, my forehead into his chin and mouth. My hands automatically went up, pressing against his chest and sending us both bouncing off each other, landing on our behinds. Apologising profusely, he offered me his hand and pulled me to my feet. The impact had left a red egg on my head and skinned my palms raw. He, however, came across a little worse for wear, sporting a newly chipped tooth, and fat, bleeding lip. As soon as I got a whiff of the blood on his breath, I knew, he was the one.

I pointed to my house across the street, inviting him in to clean up while he called the emergency dentist. It was the least I could do.

Ushering him into the bathroom, I had him perch on the edge of the bath while I rummaged through the cabinet for the first aid kit. I needed to knock him out somehow. There was no way I could do this without it… unless…

A MILLION CLAY WOLVES (Greed)

BY AMBER K. BRYANT

Do you remember Jamey? Has a tattoo of a whale on his right arm, wears a red and white striped tank top—Sound familiar?”

Mora nodded. “He juggled knives and guns.”

“That’s right. Jamey is my boyfriend and we’re very happy, only… He has this crazy idea that he should give up the troop, join the army instead. He thinks it would provide a better life for us, but he’s wrong. This is the only life I want and I don’t want it to change. I need you to change his mind.”

“What?” She took a step away from Dare. “I… I can’t do that!”

“You don’t realize it, but you can. I saw it in you. The ability to endow magic. You just needed a jumpstart, and yesterday…” she pointed to the feather, “I gave it to you.”

Mora stared at the feather, still crumpled in her hand.

“Tell the feather that Jamey’s place is with me. In the troop. Tell the feather it needs to change Jamey’s mind. Go on.”

Mora lifted the feather halfway to her face, then paused. This would never work. Clearly circus life had taken its toll on Dare’s mental health. Or perhaps unstable people were attracted to the quirky life the troop seemed to lead. It was silly to give in to Dare’s demands. Then again, if she didn’t do it, perhaps Dare would become so angry, she’d bust out of her purple corset and become a rage-fueled She-Hulk. Perhaps the simplest way out of this situation was to tell the feather to become a mind-changer and then get the hell out of there.

“Fine, whatever.” She brought the feather to her lips and blew words into it. “Change Jamey’s mind. Make him stay. Oh!” She jumped as a tingling sensation moved through her body, from the soles of her feet up her legs and spine, then out to the tips of her fingers and into the feather. “What… what just happened.”

Dare’s face went back to its friendly older sister mode. “Exactly what I thought would. Thank you, Mora.” She took the feather back from Mora and pinned it into her dark, shimmering hair. “Wiser people than me would tell you to be careful with this gift of yours. Magic can be used for good or for evil. It doesn’t care which, most of the time.”

Confused, Mora toyed with a stray thread from the hem of her t-shirt. “But you’re… not telling me to be careful?”

Dare grasped Mora’s chin and tilted it so their eyes met. “We don’t find out what we’re capable of through advice.” She gave Mora’s face a tiny squeeze and then let her go. “Trial and error, darlin’.
