Semester Goals: Fall 2018 Update

Hey Guys!

Can you believe how fast the fall semester went!  I guess the third time is the charm is right.  The third attempt to have school start up on a Monday was finally a success.  Classes started on August 27th and as a graduate student, we were up and running.  But here we are Winter/Christmas break upon us, so let’s see how I did for the semester.

As always idea credit for this goes to DaniDearest and I am so grateful for the idea.

Here’s my goals for this semester and how I did on them:

1. Get at least a B in my classes.

Result: ✓ Success! I can’t believe it myself, but I managed to get an A in my Gilded Age History course (I was in shock when I saw it) and a B in my Feminist Theory course.  While I wasn’t too … enthused at some of the books that we had to read, I still had a good semester overall.

2. Try and get my assignments done before the day they are due.

Result: X/✓   Ehh… this was a semi win for me.  For the most part… well at least for one class I was able to keep ahead.  But my second class not so much.  This probably has something to do with the fact that on top of my two classes, I was auditing a third and it put way too much on my plate.

3. Work out at least 2 times a week. (I’m going to make an effort, but we’ll see.)

Result: X  Yea… nope.  I think I worked a total of once this semester.  When I went to a conference in October and I went to the hotel gym with a friend.  Heck… if it wasn’t for the fact that one of my classes was being held in the Dugan (and there’s an Einstein Bagel there) I wouldn’t have even gone in there once this semester. And after a year of having a membership to Planet Fitness, and only going once… maybe twice I finally gave it up.  So until I manage to at least go twice a week maybe more I’ll be keeping this on my list.

4. Try a fitness class on campus.

Result: X  Yea… nope… see previous number!           Woman Shrugging: Medium Skin Tone on Apple

5. Spend more time with my family and friends.

Result:   I did pretty good with this one… even with me being so busy.  I worked hard to make sure that I had time to spend with family and friends.  Hopefully I’ll be able to keep going with this too.

6. Actually stick to my budget. (for food, or other things)

Result: X  Yeah… nope.  I need to do better on this.

7. Cook more, and take my own lunches for school.

Result: X/✓   I started out strong here, but about a month in slowed down and finally quit doing it.  But I’m already planning on starting this up again come January.

8. Reach my activity goals on my watch each day/week.

Result: X/✓  hmmm… I’ve done better, but considering how much I took on during the semester (not only my two courses, but I audited a third) I didn’t do too bad.  I had my two big papers for this one and a presentation for one class, as well as participating in a conference where I presented on a round table.  My total for this semester was 71 out of 141.  That’s about half where I closed my rings and there were some where I was close.  I’m going to work on this in the new semester.

 August 17/31  September 13/30  October 19/31 November 4/30  December    18/19

Total: 71/141

9. Post on each of the days I’ve assigned a post on HomeTownGirlWriter.

Result: X  … Nope, yet again this was a major failure.  Some weeks I had posts, and others not so much.  If it hadn’t been for the book posts that I was doing for reveals I wouldn’t have anything to post.  Not only do I still have the same hectic schedule, I added to it by accepting a graduate position.  But I’m trying.

10. Expand my Photography business. (The tiny one that it is!)

Result:  ✓  … I’ve been having some amazing photo shoots this semester.  Since the summer I’ve had 9 photo shoots, and I’m hoping to keep steady with it.  I’ve got one planned so far during the winter break.  But I can’t wait to see what the new year will bring.

11. Save at least 10% of my paychecks each week.

Result:  X  … Nope, I’m not sure what happened this semester, but I totally slacked on this.  Back to the grind on this for the time being.

12. Make my bed and pick up things in my room each morning. (In my hope for a clean room/house.)

Result: X  … Nope, I dropped the ball on this one big time.  I’m pretty sure my room looks like a bomb hit it.  I keep trying but it just seems to get worse instead of better.  Between my three jobs and a busier than usual semester, I’m gonna have to get a new game plan and try again.

13. Take time for myself each week.

Result: ✓  Completed! I made sure that each week I had at least 30 minutes to an hour for myself.  Whether it was just to read a book that I wanted or to take a long bubble bath, it was my me time.  I especially needed this because this last semester has been a really rough one.  This is something that I’ll keep working towards as the semesters come and go.

14. Open my planner everyday and make sure it’s completed for the upcoming week.

Result: ✓  I’m not sure what I did before I started using my Happy Planner, I love my mini (although I do have a classic as well) and the fact that I can take it anywhere!

15. Have saved at least $500 by the end of the semester.

Result: ✓   Yep!!! I finally completed this. I’m working on getting better at saving my money.

16. Go somewhere I’ve never been before.

Result:    Yep! I finally got to go to Dallas! A friend of my sister’s got married up there and I got to tag along, and we had a few stops along the way.  We got to visit the Magnolia Silos (if you haven’t gone there yet you need to stop by!), and Ikea during this trip.  It was amazing!  I can’t wait to go back to the Silos and it shouldn’t be too long before the Ikea in San Antonio opens up.

8.5/15 Goals Completed

Yea… I think I have my work cut out for me in the Spring 2019 semester.  This is definitely one of the reasons that I love to have written down goals.  It gives me a point that I need to improve and where I’m doing good.

Question of the day: How did you do on any goals that you set for your Fall 2018 semester?  Comment down below.

Until Next Time!

Book Blitz: For the Blood by Debbie Cassidy

For the Blood
Debbie Cassidy
(For the Blood, #1)
Publication date: December 27th 2018
Genres: Adult, Post-Apocalyptic, Romance, Urban Fantasy

Stay alive at all costs. No attachments, no looking back, no emotion.

The last thing my father gave me was a key. No explanation, no details, just a key. The last thing he asked of me was to take the key to a set of co-ordinates. But survival in a fallen world filled with Feral isn’t easy. The Fangs and the Claws, once upstanding members of society are now slave to the virus, hunting indiscriminately under a perpetually full moon.

There is no hope. There is no haven. Not alone. Not until them.

They are a new breed of monster—beasts of both fang and fur. Unaffected by the sickness, they crave only one thing, and it runs through my veins. Survive, my father said. Look out for no one except yourself. But sometimes the only way to survive is to make attachments. Sometimes the only way to live is to accept a dance with death. And right now, for me, the path to survival is in the blood.

Here’s to hoping it doesn’t kill me.

The Vampire Diaries meets The Walking Dead in this Post-Apocalyptic Urban Fantasy with a slow burn Why Choose romance

EXCERPT:

Had the stars always been this bright? Or maybe impending death was lifting a veil from my eyes. The steady pump of my blood seeping out of my many wounds and into the dry, cracked earth and my ragged, irregular breath were the only sounds in the cold, still night. The Feral were down, but they’d taken me with them.

Laughter bubbled up my throat, a sound filled with life, if only I could move.

It would be over soon. No more fighting. No more loss. No more pain. The stars called to me, and I watched, counting them as my vision blurred in and out of focus, as my life blood fled my body as if it were a curse. How long before a person bled out?

Sunshine and the scent of freshly cut grass. Kisses, sweet kisses and toffee popcorn, hot cocoa under the stars in the compound garden… Memories of safer times. Happy memories that usually made me feel better, but nope, sorry, still feeling bad.

So sorry, Tobias. So sorry, Dad.

The crunch of boots echoed through the silence, invasive and intrusive. A shadow fell over me. Cold hands touched my face and startling gray eyes blocked out the stars.

The Fang from the storeroom, the one who’d bit me. Uninfected but hungry. Was he going to finish me off? But he was surveying the land around me, his brow creased in a neat frown. He was big, and his rugged, stubbled face hid the perfectly formed lips that had sucked on my neck not long ago.

“You Fang …” The word ended in a slur. “Bit me …”

His attention snapped back to me, and his eyes shone like pennies in the dark. I reached up with a strength I didn’t know I had and touched his chilly jaw. My fingers, deathly pale against his tanned skin, left a bloody trail as they slipped away. My blood had put color back in his cheeks and now that same blood was seeping into the ground, wasted. Was it getting darker?

Arms slipped under me, and my body was torn from the cold, dead earth. Where his hands had been chilled, his body was warm. He cradled me against a wide, muscular chest, and the heat seeped into me, reviving, urging me to live. The scent of cedar competed with the coppery smell of my blood. His nostrils flared, and then he pulled me close, dipped his head, and swept a rough tongue over the wound at my neck. The wound he’d made. Fire shot through me, searing my veins and tearing a hoarse scream from my throat. His mouth latched onto me and horror swelled my heart.

No. Not again. But there was no bite. No draw of blood. This wasn’t the kiss of death, it was life.

SABRINA

As I lay on the bed, wearing my ex-fiancé’s t-shirt and remembering the night he left me six months ago, I realize that tears are slipping silently down my cheeks.

I’ve done reasonably well, too. The first week, I was catatonic. The first month, I was practically a zombie. In those days, even showering on my day off had been a challenge. Within a couple of months, though, I was doing better. By the ninety-day mark, I could be mistaken for someone who hadn’t been virtually left at the altar.

Now, lying on the bed six months after Grant had thrown away our life together, I was almost indiscernible from a normal girl. Looking at me most days, you would never know that my life had been ripped apart by an exotic Olympian named Isabel and my former fiancé, Grant.

I sit up, realizing how far I’d come since that night. I put the back of my hand up to one cheek, then the other. No more. That asshole doesn’t get another single tear from me. Control-G-Delete.

Book Blitz: The Cowboy’s Forgetful Bride by Leslie North

The Cowboy’s Forgetful Bride
Leslie North
(Brothers of the Cooper Ranch, #1)
Publication date: December 27th 2018
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

Bella Whitmore is the heir to the Whitmore Shipping fortune. Refusing to be pigeon-holed into the socialite box, Bella has worked her entire life to show her father that she can be the son he never had and take over the Whitmore Shipping Empire. So when she wakes up, on a ranch in Montana, missing the memories of the last month of her life, you’d think that would be the worst case scenario. And it is…until she realizes the devil she’d worked so hard to avoid for the last year is now her husband.

Sawyer Cooper knows he’s a devil. Handsome, charismatic, and with an eye for feeding people’s vices, Sawyer’s reinvented himself as a shark in the business world, but very few realize that he’s actually a Cooper of the Country Coop fortune. But rather than resting on the laurels (and red-neck reputation) of Country Coop, Sawyer wants to show the world exactly how important farming can be. To do this, he needs Bella Whitmore’s help. Every bit as beautiful as her name suggests, and smarter than everyone else in the room, Sawyer knows that she could make his dreams come true, both inside and outside of the bedroom. And after a year of pursuing her, she’s finally said yes — to everything.

But after a horseback riding accident, Bella’s brain has reset back to the beginning, and Sawyer was never good at starting a game over. Especially not after he’d already won. Now, Sawyer needs to figure out how to woo her for a second time. Because this time around it’s not just his professional pride on the line: it’s his heart.

Goodreads / Amazon

EXCERPT:

She had a lot of nerve to show up looking so goddamned gorgeous and not deign to give him the time of day.

Sawyer Cooper liked nerve.

Their game had been going on for the better part of a year now. Function after function, they would circle each other—or more accurately, he would circle, like a wolf closing in on an unsuspecting pronghorn—and when he had all but backed her into a corner, she would finally turn to acknowledge him with a show of polite surprise.

God, their game of cat and mouse turned him on more than he had ever imagined it would. He’d been crossing paths with her since he settled in Boston, and she was one of the reasons he’d stayed so long, even enduring stuffy events like this one. He liked to keep his distance from Montana anyway—and the family business he wanted no part of. The Country Coop chain of farm stores was his family’s legacy; it was an empire, all right, but in a family of three brothers, could you ever really be the undisputed king of it? No, Sawyer wanted to make his own waves in the world, and that meant divorcing himself completely from Country Coop and its redneck reputation.

Sawyer wanted a lot of things, but he had never wanted to bed a woman as thoroughly—and hopefully repeatedly—as he wanted to bed Bella. Problem was, the vixen knew it. How could she be oblivious, when Sawyer himself made it so obvious? He had done everything except outright ask her for a romp between the sheets. He still had some shred of pride, despite Bella’s persistent ability to test it.

Looking like that, tonight just might be the night she brought him to his knees.

He propped himself up on his elbow and grazed his fingertips over the upraised golden glow of the matching mark he’d given me the night before. “Mated,” he said, his lips curling into a smile. “Marked. He continued to speak, his lips grazing over my hard nipple. “But more importantly, I am yours. SNEAK PEEKS:

Excerpt from Holly Hook:

I’m Ellia, Syndie’s ugly stepsister. Mother knows this, so she works Syndie to the bone, but this whole time, she’s been waiting. Planning. Syndie wants us on the streets, and despite my kindness, I’m no exception.

Following her to the Courts lands me in the hands of a handsome guard, Jasper. Literally. And he doesn’t seem to notice my corset or frizzy hair. Nervous and secretive, Jasper wants to stop cruel Prince Calvin from becoming King, which he’ll do when he chooses his wife at the royal ball. And now I’m key to a plan that can save my family and the entire Kingdom.

Our weapons? Two magical slippers. One gives false beauty–but only until midnight. Then the other shows the wearer’s true nature. If Prince Calvin even holds the hand of his chosen when the clock strikes twelve, the spell hits him, too. Everyone will see the truth and he’ll never become King.

He and Syndie deserve each other.

I must make her dreams come true. But Mother, my sister, and a kingdom of jealous girls will do anything to stop Syndie from snagging the Prince. But what terrifies me the most is that trapped slipper. I can’t let Jasper see how ugly I am, but if it all goes wrong, I’ll have to give myself to its magic.

The Kingdom must be saved at all costs, even if I must sacrifice my happily ever after.

Blurb from Emma Savant:

Hidden in the city of Portland, Oregon, is a shimmering world of magic—one faerie Olivia Feye doesn’t want to touch with a ten-foot wand. She’d rather study biology, or garden, or floss her teeth, or do literally anything except pay attention to the Glimmering world and her internship at Portland’s premier faerie godparent agency.

But when her supervisor is hospitalized after a flying pumpkin carriage accident, Olivia is thrust into the middle of a case. And this one won’t be easy: Her client is Elle, a barista whose plans don’t include an enchanted prom or Prince Charming.

The reward for a happily-ever-after is enough gold pieces to get Olivia out of the Glimmering world forever. But as she comes face-to-face with the complexities of faerie godmothering, she’s forced to wonder: How much is she willing to sacrifice for her own happy ending?

Blurb from D.L Pitchford:

A modern day Cinderella with a twist…

High school seniors Noah Barton and Eden Prince have competed for top of their class since age seven. When their academic rivalry ruins a thermodynamics demo, their physics teacher decides to help them get along. By forcing them to be lab partners.

As graduation approaches, Noah and Eden are too busy figuring out college to deal with each other. Noah’s football-loving dad sabotages his chance to win a big scholarship. Eden’s traditional mother cares more about finding her a husband than encouraging her dreams.

Winning big at the regional science fair is their last hope.

Will Noah follow in his mother’s footsteps? Can Eden show her parents the environment is more important than a boyfriend? Will Noah and Eden finally learn to work together?

Follow Noah and Eden’s budding romance in this emotionally charged, gender-swapped retelling of Cinderella.

Blurb from Cate Dean:

Sometimes, you have to create your own happily ever after…

Elle Summers spends her days taking care of her stepmother and stepsisters, but she is secretly working on her escape. With the help of her best friend, she plans to act her way to freedom.

When she auditions for a local production, her life is turned upside down by entrepreneur and producer Henry Winters. He needs a new leading lady for his Broadway production, and he wants her. He sweeps her off her feet and to the Great White Way, where she finally has her chance to shine.

But in the whirlwind of her new life, she forgets one thing – her stepmother and stepsisters.

While she starts to live the life she’s always dreamed about, they are plotting a way to bring her home. And if their plan works, Elle will fail – in a way that not even a fairy godmother can fix.

Now, she’s a mouthwatering woman, who wants nothing to do with me. One way or the other, I’m gonna help her avenge her grand-mère and sweet talk her into my bed. Maybe not in that order.

Goodreads / Amazon

EXCERPT:

“So, is Chloe rentin’ this place out to you?” Saint asked.

“Chloe?” The sound of my own name startled me so much, I dropped the keys.

Saint bent and picked them up, before handing them to me. I glanced up, meeting those startling, swallow-me-whole blue eyes. Somehow, I couldn’t look away.

Saint cleared his throat. “What was I sayin’? Right. Chloe’s the girl who owns this place. Her grandmother passed a few weeks ago. She must’ve rented it out to you.”

“Oh, uh, um, yes.” The lie clogged my throat, and I had to force the words out.

“What’s wrong?” He studied my face.

“Nothing. I’m fine.”

And then his eyes widened. “Wait a minute. No.”

“What?”

“Holy shit.” Saint stabbed an accusatory finger at me. “You’re her.”

“Who?” I played dumb, desperately clinging to the plan.

“No fuckin’ way.” He backed off. “You’re Chloe!”

“Yes, but—”

“But you’re…Little Bit.” He trailed off. Saint had given me the nickname when I was a kid because I’d been short. Not to mention, round. “No, I can’t do this. It ain’t right.” Saint shook his head as if trying to clear the cobwebs away. “Sorry. I have to go.”

Saint raced back down the path. He straddled his motorcycle and then took off, leaving a cloud of dirt and smoke in his wake.

And I was left on the front porch, watching him leave.

Well, that didn’t go according to plan.
